"This is an exciting moment, to be writing a preface, not just for a book on
Asterisk, but for a book on Asterisk in Italian, a language I barely speak (or
write) a word of! As exciting as this is, it's worth a moment to remember the
humble roots from which Asterisk was derived.
Fundamentally, Asterisk did not start as a project to change the world.
Rather, it started life as a project to let me avoid the expense of a phone system
for my tiny company at the time, Linux Support Services. For better or for worse,
however, I don't tend to think small and I selected the name Asterisk to
represent my vision that the software would grow to do everything in
telecommunications, just as rm -f * would delete every file in a given directory.
The first public release of Asterisk was in 1999, but it really wasn't until 2001
or so when it first started to gain traction in a public sense ... "
